8. Segue into Research

At this point I know that my research in my Proposal blog was sorely lacking, and I needed to play catch up to avoid further wasted work like the first day of sculpting.

One good resource for this was the website for Smooth On, which is the manufacturer for the silicone I intended on buying and using, called Dragonskin.

Looked through some of the tutorials from this page (SmoothOn, n.d.), but a lot of the resources was making the mould with SmoothOn products such as their resins or silicone, instead of plaster (which makes sense, it's the products they're selling).

The next website I found really helpful was davidneat.com. David explains things like undercuts, release agents, and various materials that are used in mould-making/casting. He also covers the types of equipment that is useful, such as scales, mixing cups, vaseline, and white spirit.

David Neat also has this very useful tutorial on how he made flexible puppet hands using silicone and a plaster cast. He first sculpts the hand using Sculpey, and builds a lego wall for the mould. Then he pours the plaster mould, removes the sculpey, pours in the silicone and sandwiches a wire armature between two layers. I think this method will be very close to what I'm doing with my heart.
