26. Interviews Part 3

Part 3 is more results from Section 2 of my interviews, tabulated and annotated.

3.1 Westminster Abbey bells, from Dean's Yard, some birds, movement and traffic - 1972
(2B2,reprocessed)
The results for this clip were pretty spread out, only slightly skewing towards positive. Most people were able to recognise it as churchbells.

3.2 London Central Mosque, Regents Park - congregation at Friday prayers - near end of
prayers, with chanted responses from congregation
The sound of Friday prayers is something I'm personally familiar with, since in Malaysia it's broadcasted pretty loudly. Most respondents for my study were unfamiliar with the sound, describing it as "mysterious". Made some of them uncomfortable.

3.3 Evening prayers, end of ceremony - animated chanting 4'08" chanting stops, bells and
then leader solo (some noise from child)
The clip describes the chanting as "evening prayers", but those familiar with Buddhism would recognise the chanting as relating to this religion. Interestingly, those unfamiliar with Buddhism linked this chanting with the movie Frozen. The word "ritual" was frequently used.

4.1 Queen Street, Auckland - cars and buses passing and waiting at busy crossroads,
distant myna birds, laughter, conversation and pedestrian crossing signals.
Most respondents linked this clip particular cities, and had somewhat positive reactions to this clip.

4.2 Grandfather clock (1680) - ticking
Very mixed bag of responses for this clip, hard to make any conclusions.

4.3 Household: Refrigerator hum. (Technical note: for use at low level)
Another clip with mixed results, though this one skews slightly negative. Even though the clip is only of a refrigerator, a few respondents described scenes involving late night convenience store shopping, and neon lights.

5.1 Lorikeets at dawn, Manly beach, Australia - raccous dawn chorus of Rainbow Lorikeets
in tall trees against a background of Tasman sea surf.
Pretty mixed, skewing on the negative. A few respondents had more positive responses initially, but as the clip wore on it began to feel more chaotic.

5.2 Seawash at river estuary; mid perspective waves on single - 1981 (1S4, reprocessed)
Pretty overwhelmingly positive results. People just like the ocean, I guess.

5.3 Tropical Storm, rain & heavy thunder recorded from apartment balcony.
People also like rainstorms. Many respondents described this clip in further detail compared to other clips, linking it to a certain memory of heavy rainfall, or deciding that the rain was falling on concrete or a roof.

As you can see, though the survey generated some data, at the end of the day it's kind of served to prove that memories and the positivity/negativity of are very relative, and dependent on things like culture and upbringing. I'm glad I did the survey, but I'm now only more stressed and lost on what I'll need to include in the final exhibit. sigh.
