19. Silicone Casting - Part 1

This is going to be another image-heavy post, and I might split Day 1's work progress into 2 parts bc it's quite long. Got all the materials I needed to start making the silicone heart, and honestly I'm quite excited.
Yes I got all those paint colours to try to get a good range of colours
Also look at the clay heart! All dry now, slightly wonky but I'm happy with it haha. It has no purpose, just a keepsake. The mould is much lighter after about a week in the drying cabinet thing, and feels more solid than when I first took out the clay.
Used a sponge, and a brush to clean up the mould even more.
Before getting started, Kath suggested that I can do a test layer, and pull out some of the clay residue with that test layer so that the final one was cleaner.

Nervesss

Tested just the bloody red colour, ignore my forks and ridged cups I changed them later
I started out with very very little silicone, and mixed them in cups with ridges on them, using some clean disposable forks I had. Bad idea. I didn't mix enough to cover the whole mould (forgot to take a photo of that though), and the mix got stuck in the ridges of the cup and the forks.

More money spent. Didn't get receipts though so I don't recall how much it added up to.
Which is why I popped over to art store to quickly get some mixing cups and popsicle sticks. cut up the mixing cups to just use the lower half which didn't have grooves.

Mix 1.2
Set a timer with my watch this time to monitor the mixing better. Also added less paint

My first hodgepodge layer, which I moved around while it was curing to stop it from pooling at the base due to gravity

Zoom in to see the different colours, and what a big difference it makes

Air bubbles! gah. It wasn't noticeable when I pulled it out of the mould though

Waited for about an hour and half before I dared to pull out this first test layer, but the process was extremely satisfying. Also look at how stretchy it is haha.

Thin floppy heart that came out.

Update* Realised that the videos I added before were uploaded as images, reuploaded them onto YouTube to re-embed here, hence the later date of the video upload compared to the post.
